Benefits of hiring a Postpartum Doula

When I first heard the term “doula” my definition was limited to a person who advocates for someone during labor. While that’s not entirely untrue, it's also only a sliver of what falls under the doula scope.

For starters, there are many kinds of doulas - labor & birth doula, postpartum doula, death doula… the list goes on. In general, a doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and educational support. Doulas are NOT medical professionals.

So, what exactly does postpartum doula support look like and why does it matter?

Postpartum doula support is centered around the following objectives:

  1. The physical and emotional well-being of the birthing person

  2. The newborn’s transition into life outside the womb

  3. Assistance with anything that gets in the way of the first two goals

This could look like conversations around how your body is healing after birth and regular check-ins regarding your emotional health. While doulas are not medical professionals, they are well trained to identify anything outside of ‘normal’ recovery. They’ll be there to remind you you’re not alone and indicate when a referral to medical professionals may be needed.

Postpartum doulas are also well versed in all things newborn - from feeding to soothing to bathing and beyond - making them an excellent resource for your new parent questions. Overnight support is a popular use of a doula’s expertise. When sleep feels impossible during those early newborn days, your doula can be trusted to care for your new little one while you get some much needed rest.

As stated above, a doula’s final goal is to help with anything that gets in the way of your recovery and your baby’s transition to the outside world. This could look like washing pump parts or bottles and other light household tasks - giving you more time to bond with your baby. A doula’s specific tasks are centered around your needs.
